The Uncertain Behavior of Clouds is a lecture performance currently in development that will merge research, art (visual, sound, performance), education and storytelling. Clouds have been one of the biggest uncertainties in predicting the severity of global warming. Drawing from a specific scientific study that uses cloud-modeling to forecast a near future where most low-level clouds will cease to exist, Lyon draws on the politics of extinction in our atmosphere to share a braided narrative investigating a wide range of topics from nuclear detonation in space to nephophilia, conspiracy theories to neoliberalism’s effect on weather forecasting.
Calista Lyon is an Australian artist and educator. Using a research-informed expanded photographic practice, she constructs installations, performances and community-engaged works that investigate and disrupt colonial-capitalist epistemologies—using art as a form of critical resistance. She is currently the Assistant Professor of Photography & Expanded Media at the University of Arkansas.
